- Generic Skills
I have developed a wide range of skills such as the ability to multitask and balance work whilst studying full-time. Throughout my academia experiences, I have shown my ability to effectively manage time, especially in regard to meeting assessment deadlines. In addition, I have a high level of communication skills, utilised in oral presentations and community member consultations. Moreover, my researching skills such as the ability to effectively critically analyse text and transfer them into case studies, and written reports, are reflective upon my high achievements throughout the duration of my tertiary education.
2. Specialised Skills
Throughout my degree, I have attained the ability to effectively utilise sociological theory in analysing and evaluating social issues from a critical sense. Such skills have ultimately been reflected in the formulation of my hypothetical submission paper to a NSW Inquiry into domestic and family violence (DFV) in ATSI communities, for a unit called “Family Violence: Policy and Practice”. Throughout my research, I utilised a mixed-methods approach in collating qualitative data from governmental data, and incorporating it alongside quantitative surveys. My research into DFV in ATSI communities, has ultimately widened my cross-cultural skills.
3. Community Funding Application Development
Through my previous tertiary educational experiences in conducting research reports, I have developed various skills which are transferrable in many settings. In regard to such transferable skills, I can adequately identify the needs of a community such as highlighting social issues and the gaps within the wider social system, in creating effective and sustainable solutions. In a community project group assessment, my group collectively identified employment as an issue for the Indigenous Australian community, and analysed the relevant funding bodies who we identified as potential investors. I was tasked with examining the annual reports of the government bodies to critically analyse their strategic plans and to match their ambitions with our project. Ultimately, having transferrable skills has allowed me to have a positive input towards the group’s performance.
4. Applied Debating
My understanding of applied debates is that it is a key element throughout all facets of government and non-governmental institutions, made to persuade an audience to a particular argument. In my tertiary educational experience, I have developed debating skills which can be utilised in the professional working environment. Through the creation of a position paper on multiculturalism in Australia, I have developed the skill of effectively cross-analysing up-to-date research and data to formulate a valid argument which persuades the audience on the successes of Australian multiculturalism. Through an in-depth analysis, I have also developed strategic solutions to enhancing cultural diversity and inclusiveness in Australia.
